    Native Vote Arizona

Get out the Vote in Indian Country:

    From Native Vote 2010:

American Indians and Alaska Natives comprise 5.7% of the overall state population, and 4.71% of Arizonans who are 18 and over. Senator John McCain (R) has held office since 1986, so it is unlikely a close race will emerge.

The 1st congressional district is home to many large tribes, which include the Navajo, Apache, and Hopi. These tribes make up 18.2% of the district’s population. In 2009, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick (D) ended a 14 year streak by the Republicans after Congressman Rick Renzi (R) retired. For the upcoming election, Paul Gosar won the GOP primary and is currently leading the race by 6 points (47-41). This district has been identified as an important and close race in Arizona, where Indian Country will determine its electoral outcome. Tribes: Ak-Chin, Gila River, Hopi, Navajo, San Carlos Apache, San Juan Southern Paiute, Tohono O’odham, Tonto Apache, White Mountain Apache, Yavapai Apache, Yavapai-Prescott, Zuni

The 5th congressional district has always been identified as a swing district. This year is no exception. Representative Harry Mitchell (D) currently holds the district’s seat, but republican nominee David Schweikert is challenging him for it. Shweikert currently has a 6-point lead (50-44). The Native American population in this district is 2% and accounts for 2.25% of eligible voters. Although these numbers may appear small, a toss-up race always relies on smaller populations to turn out and vote. Tribes: Fort McDowell Yavapai, Salt River Pima-Maricopa.

The 8th congressional district was recently identified by public polls as a toss-up race. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D) is currently tied with candidate Jesse Kelly (R). They both possess 46% of the district’s vote.

    Primary Election – August 24, 2010
    General Election – November 2, 2010
Voter Registration closes October 4, 2010
